Astros Fire Pitching Coach Brad Arnsberg

Hey, somebody’s head had to come off, and GAME OF THRONES SPOILER ALERT! Ned Stark’s is already gone.

This is just the sort of thing that happens when you're faithful to the source material, or have the worst record in the major leagues. The latter of which describes the 25-42 Houston Astros, who fired pitching coach Brad Arnsberg Tuesday morning. Zachary Levine:

The Astros have fired pitching coach Brad Arnsberg and replaced him with Doug Brocail, who had been serving as special assistant to general manager Ed Wade.

Wade, who is flying back to Houston from the west coast, said the move was a result of philosophical differences but declined to get into specifics. He said he called Arnsberg early this morning to tell him he was fired.

The Astros' 4.69 ERA ranks 15th in the National League, which would be last if somebody in the National League would move to the American League. Starters Wandy Rodriguez and Bud Norris have pitched well; starters J.A. Happ and Brett Myers have not. The bullpen hasn't been good, though I'm not sure you can hang Brandon Lyon's 11.48 ERA around Arnsberg's neck.

Brad Arnsberg was well-regarded as Toronto’s pitching coach, and he was well-regarded as Houston’s pitching coach last season when Happ and Myers both pitched well.

Ed Wade cites “philosophical differences” as cause of the firing. This might mean that Arnsberger and management fundamentally disagreed about the answer to Heidegger’s “Question of Being,” or it might mean the general manager needed a scapegoat for all the losing and didn’t want to fire himself.

You decide.
