Danny Wuerrfel Receiving Treatment For Guillain-Barre Syndrome, According To Report

Former Florida Gators quarterback Danny Wuerffel has entered a Birmingham Ala., hospital for treatment of Guillain-Barre syndrome, reports the Gainesville Sun. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, Guillain-Barre Syndrome "is a serious disorder that occurs when the body's defense (immune) system mistakenly attacks part of the nervous system. This leads to nerve inflammation that causes muscle weakness."

The NCBI reports that most people do recover fully from this, but that it could take months or even years. While not many details have emerged from this yet, there are reports that he contracted a “stomach bug” while on a retreat in Colorado, which may have precipitated the onset of GBS.

Wuerffel played for the Florida Gators from 1993-96 and capped his career in his senior year with the 1996 Heisman Trophy. He passed for 3.625 yards and threw 39 touchdown passes.
