Cardinals’ Matt Holliday Returning To Lineup Thursday

St. Louis Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday will be activated from the Disabled List in time to start Thursday night against the Nationals. This is undoubtedly a good thing, what with rookie Allen Craig just hitting the DL with a ruptured knee bone.

Holliday obviously heads right back to his spot in left field. Prior to suffering his hamstring injury two weeks ago, Holliday was hitting .342/.433/.542, arguably the best line of his fine career. With Holliday, Albert Pujols and Lance Berkman in the lineup, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better 3-4-5 punch in the National League (or anywhere else, probably).

If there's any downside to Holliday's return, it's that there's no longer anywhere for Jon Jay to play. Which is why Tony La Russa might still occasionally be tempted to play Pujols at third base, shift Berkman from right field to first base, and send Jay to right. With the Cardinals now engaged in a dogfight with the Brewers in the National League Central, every run might be precious.
