NASL Reportedly Ready To Add Ottawa In 2013

Ottawa will become the NASL’s ninth franchise when they begin play in 2013, according to a report at Canadian Soccer News. The announcement will reportedly be made on Monday when NASL commissioner David Downs visits town. Among the principal owners are John Pugh, who currently owns Ottawa’s PDL team.

The NASL currently has eight teams with the San Antonio Scorpions set to take the Montreal Impacts place next season. The addition of the Ottawa team would give the league three non-U.S.-based teams, falling below the 75 percent threshold the USSF had set as one of their criteria for a Division 2 league. The NASL was able to get a waiver for this season and would likely need to seek another waiver in 2013 unless two more U.S.-based teams are found in the meantime.

CSN also reported that a third Canadian city was close to joining NASL, but plans to bring D2 to Hamilton have stalled.
