Portland Timbers coach John Spencer was fined an additional $2,000 for post-game comments he made about officiating in last week's match. That is in addition to the automatic one-game ban and $500 fine he received after getting ejected from the match.
Portland Timbers Coach John Spencer Fined $2,500 For Criticism Of Referees
“John Spencer’s recent public criticism of MLS officials was not constructive and will not be tolerated,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement released by the league. “We recognize that referee’s decisions can be debated, but public comments cannot impugn the credibility of the officials or the League. MLS requires that its players, coaches, and club leadership maintain proper respect for the officials at all times.”
Following last week's loss to the Colorado Rapids -- the Timbers' third straight and second in a row at home -- Spencer was especially critical of referee Abiodun Okulaja. He called into question his decision-making on several calls and even his conditioning, according to the Oregonian:
“The referee was getting tired. He couldn’t cover the ground. And I said that to the fourth official, ‘He can’t cover the ground. He’s blowing calls from 50 to 60 yards away,’ ” Spencer said. “Poor, poor performance by the referee.”
