College World Series 2011, Vanderbilt Vs. North Carolina Score: Game Tied After Three

The 2011 College World Series is underway from TD Ameritrade Stadium - Rosenblatt Stadium’s replacement - and the North Carolina Tar Heels and Vanderbilt Commodores are involved in a tight one. Both teams have scored, and they’re all tied up through three innings as they fight for the NCAA baseball title.

Vanderbilt and UNC both got on the board in the first inning, with Vanderbilt batting at the top of the inning. Freshman Tony Kemp, the leadoff hitter, reached base with a bunt single and was able to get to second base on a throwing error by pitcher Patrick Johnson. On the next at bat, Anthony Gomez grounded out but Colin Moran failed to hold Kemp as he advanced to third. The next batter was Aaron Westlake, who hit a deep fly ball that allowed Kemp to tag up and score the first run.

North Carolina answered in the bottom of the inning and, like Vanderbilt, they were aided by poor defense. Leadoff hitter Chaz Frank hit a triple thanks to poor positioning in the outfield, then scored when a ground ball by Moran couldn’t be stopped by Westlake.

In the second inning, Sonny Gray’s control failed him as he walked two batters and threw a wild pitch. Seth Baldwin singled in the inning, driving in Ben Bunting, and UNC took the lead. Their lead didn’t last long, though, as Vanderbilt were able to manufacture a run and tie the game at a score of 2-2 in the top of the 3rd inning. The inning featured a funny situation in which Kemp was walked, but the umpire (and UNC) believed there had only been three balls. The confusion was caused when a ball hit the end of Kemp’s bat for a foul ball while also hitting Kemp’s hand, causing a debate and some delay. Thankfully, Kemp ended up drawing a walk anyway.
