The North Carolina Tar Heels lead the Vanderbilt Commodores in the first game of the 2011 College World Series, but it could be a lot worse for the Vanderbilt baseball team. UNC had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Corey Williams got out of the jam and right now, North Carolina only leads by one run as a result. After five innings, the score is 3-2 in favor of UNC baseball.
College World Series 2011, Vanderbilt Vs. North Carolina Score: UNC Baseball Leads In Fifth
Sonny Gray was solid today, but did not have his best stuff and as a result, was pulled after 4 2/3 innings with the bases loaded. Williams, a left-handed pitcher came in and did his job, striking out Chaz Frank, getting out of the bases loaded jam.
UNC scored their third run in the fourth inning, thanks to some errors by Gray and catcher Curt Casali. With runners on first and second, Casali allowed a passed ball, which allowed the runners to advance. That turned out to be a moot point just a few pitches later when Gray walked Frank, loading the bases. He then hit Colin Moran, allowing UNC to score and take the lead.
Gray is out, but Patrick Johnson is going strong. He’s throwing strikes and keeping his pitch count down, and he looks like a good bet to pitch into the 6th inning and beyond.
