Brian Roberts Out Until After All-Star Break With Concussion

When Brian Roberts first hit the DL with either a concussion or concussion-like symptoms -- these days, who can tell? -- the prognosis was that he would miss another three weeks, at least.

Well, that was three weeks ago. And now’s when the “at least” comes into play. From Brittany Ghiroli (via MLB.com):

Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts saw concussion specialist Dr. Michael Collins in Pittsburgh on Tuesday and was given the same prognosis as two weeks ago: rest.

Roberts hasn't played since the 16th of May. That was five weeks ago. Now he's not expected back before the All-Star break, which is another three weeks. After that, who knows? As we've seen with a number of players, most famously Justin Morneau, once a player's missed more than few games with these symptoms, it's essentially impossible to guess when he'll be ready to play again.

As Ghiroli points out, this is the second straight season in which Roberts has missed a big chunk of time; last year it was a herniated disk in his lower back. In Roberts' absence, Robert Andino has manned second base for the Orioles. Andino's not much of a hitter, and is probably miscast as an every-day second baseman. Buck Showalter doesn't really have great options until Roberts is healthy, but it would be nice to see young Ryan Adams get a real look.
