Concussions in sports are tricky things, as we have learned from the case of Justin Morneau, who is still trying to make it back to his previous form nearly two years after he suffered one in a game against the Blue Jays.
Brian Roberts: Still Working On Comeback To Orioles From Concussion
Baltimore’s Brian Roberts also had a concussion, or multiple ones, and has not been able to play much the last two seasons; in 2011 he played in just 39 games, hitting .221/.273/.331, far below his career norms.
The Baltimore Sun reports that Roberts is “progressing”, but his future is still uncertain:
Roberts is gradually beginning to do more baseball work on the back fields of the Ed Smith Stadium Complex. He’s begun taking live batting practice from coaches, and for the past week he’s been working with former Orioles shortstop Mike Bordick taking ground balls. He’s also be doing running and stretching activities with special assistant Brady Anderson.
The next step in Roberts’ progress — which would seemingly be facing live pitching from teammates — isn’t clear.
The Sun reports that the Orioles expect to begin the season with Robert Andino as their second baseman. Roberts is now 34 and the Orioles owe him $10 million this year and $10 million in 2013, so both he and the team have an interest in getting him healthy and on the field. Just when that might happen is unknown.
