Last Friday at Fenway Park, Brewers righthander Shaun Marcum left his start against the Red Sox after just one inning, in which he allowed four hits and two runs, including a home run to Jacoby Ellsbury. Reports were that Marcum had some kind of hip problem, though Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Brewers beat writer Tom Haudricourt tweeted otherwise on Friday:
Shaun Marcum Injury: Brewers Ace Hopes To Make Next Start
#Brewers are not reporting any injury to Marcum. Maybe they just didn’t want to send him back out after a 44-pitch inning. On Tuesday, Todd Rosiak of the Journal-Sentinel reported that Marcum has a strained hip flexor, but hopes to make his next scheduled start. Team doctors said the injury “wasn’t serious”, and:
Marcum then did some light throwing prior to the Brewers' game with the Tampa Bay Rays at Miller Park, followed by a bullpen session in which he threw about 25 pitches off the mound.
A decision on whether Marcum will make his next scheduled start on Wednesday probably won't be finalized until Tuesday, after he does some more work, including fielding ground balls to see how his hip reacts to getting off the mound.
Curiouser and curiouser. Marcum has been the Brewers' ace this year, going 7-2 with a team-leading 2.85 ERA. His next scheduled start would be Wednesday. If Marcum can't go, Rosiak reports, Marco Estrada will start against the Rays.
