Rookie Depth Chart Battles: Jaiquan Jarrett

More and more NFL rookies are expected to contribute early in their careers. However, for them to make an impact they need to beat out a veteran player. We are going to analyze the situation of specific rookies and determine the likely hood of them winning a position battle.

Player: Jaiquan Jarrett

Team: Philadelphia Eagles

Position: Safety

Competition: Quintin Mikell (free agent), Nate Allen, Jamar Wall, Kurt Coleman

Chance of winning the battle: 75 percent

Scouting Report

Thoughts: Philadelphia appears ready to move on from the productive Quintin Mikell. His possible departure opens up a starting spot in the back end of the defense. The safety position is an important part of the Eagles defense because they need to be versatile and able to hold up in coverage. There is added pressure because of the aggressive nature of the unit.

Nate Allen had a successful rookie season and he is expected to fully recover from his injury. His potential likely means he will be manning one of the safety positions. Coleman also had some success but his overall potential is limited likely resulting in a backup roll. Jarrett is a good athlete with size and versatility. He is a bit raw but with some coaching could develop into an excellent defender.

Overall, Jarrett brings the most athletic ability and upside to the position and is very likely to break camp as the starter. The one thing to consider is the possibility of Mikell returning or another free agent addition.
