Ravens Move Training Camp Site Due To NFL Lockout

The Baltimore Ravens are on the move all thanks to the NFL lockout. The team announced on Wednesday that training camp would be moved from the usual spot at McDaniel College in Westminster to their year-round facility in Owings Mills.

Ravens team president Dick Cass cited the uncertainty of the NFL lockout as the motivating factor behind the move.

"We hope to have a full NFL season in 2011, but the current timing compelled us to make this decision. We waited as long as we could, but we're beyond the dates when we could efficiently prepare for the move to McDaniel for a normal training camp start."

If the NFL lockout isn’t solved soon, we’ll see more teams following suit. The Vikings are one team that has told their training camp partner that they’ll update them on their camp status by July 18.

The reality is that teams that travel to training camp -- which is roughly half the league -- can’t just pick up and move. It’s a major operation that requires time and planning and the Ravens don’t have either of those, thanks to the lockout.

The real loser here is the Ravens fans. Fans won’t be invited to all camp events in Owings Mills so what has been a 15-year tradition of watching the Ravens at training camp in Westminster won’t be happening this year (although the team has talked about conducting some practices at M&T Bank Stadium open to the public). The Ravens said over 110,000 fans attended training camp last year and their facility in Owings Mills can’t handle those numbers.

Keep an eye on SB Nation’s Baltimore Beatdown, where you’ll see plenty of disappointed Ravens fans.
