The Churchill Downs horse race track, longtime home to the Kentucky Derby, was hit by a tornado Wednesday and suffered massive damage. Due to the excessive nature of the damage, Thursday’s racing card has been cancelled.
Churchill Downs Cancels Friday Races Following Tornado Damage
No injuries were reported, however thousands of people in the area were without power Wednesday night.
Some horses have been shipped to other sites and barns given that many of the local ones are gone. Training was also canceled. 200 horses were being housed in nine barns.
It’s not the first time Churchill Downs has been damaged by a natural disaster. In August 2009, a flash flood damaged the Kentucky Derby Museum, causing it to be closed for nine months.
Check out some more photos of the damage here and stay tuned for updates on the track and whether or not racing will pick up again over the weekend.
