If you go around the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series garage and talk to the drivers, many of them will say Marcos Ambrose is far and away the most talented road-course racer on the circuit.
NASCAR At Sonoma’s Infineon Raceway: Opportunity Knocks For Marcos Ambrose
Yes, there are great road racers throughout the Cup Series, like Juan Pablo Montoya, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart. But when it comes down to it, Ambrose may be in a class of his own.
Ambrose is the clear favorite for Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma – he should have won last year, but for an unfortunate mistake – and a win would immediately spark talk of a wild card berth for the Australian.
Should Ambrose sweep the road courses, he would be in outstanding position to make the Chase. And it’s entirely possible that could happen.
Why is Ambrose so good at road courses when other road-racing aces from other series haven’t succeeded?
The theory is that Ambrose, who drove V8 Supercars in Australia, was more suited to make the jump to NASCAR road racing than perhaps an open-wheel driver. V8 Supercars are full-bodied cars, and the skills it takes to drive one may translate better to stock cars than open-wheel cars.
Whatever the reason, you should be picking Ambrose for your fantasy racing team on Sunday.
