Rookie Depth Chart Battles: Marvin Austin

More and more NFL rookies are expected to contribute early in their careers. However, for them to make an impact they need to beat out a veteran player. We are going to analyze the situation of specific rookies and determine the likely hood of them winning a position battle.

Player: Marvin Austin

Team: New York Giants

Position: Defensive Tackle

Competition: Barry Cofield (possible free agent), Chris Canty, Linval Joseph, Rocky Bernard, Justin Tuck

Chance of winning the battle: 45 percent

Scouting Report

Thoughts: The Giants defense relies on their front four to create pressure resulting in several high draft picks along the line. Marvin Austin is an interesting prospect that has 1st round talent but questionable decision making abilities. However, he brings athleticism and youth to the defensive line and will be competing for staring reps.

Austin is a good athlete with a quick first step and the ability to penetrate the pocket. His skills are different from the other defensive tackles on the roster who excel at clogging holes and keeping linebackers clean. Austin’s ability to penetrate and create pressure could earn him early playing time. Also the pending free agency of Barry Cofield could provide extra snaps.

New York likes to use a lot of different packages some including defensive ends lining up at defensive tackles. These different packages will have an impact on Austin’s ability to get on the field. However, he maybe able to claim the starting 3 technique position if he shows up to camp in shape and shows off his explosive first step. The Giants need to be able to get penetrate on non-passing downs.
