Former NFL scout Russ Lande of Sporting News always has interesting takes on players. His latest is no different.
The Sporting News profiled four quarterback prospects not named Andrew Luck Thursday. The piece included USC's Matt Barkley, Oklahoma's Landry Jones, San Diego State's Ryan Lindley and Boise State's Kellen Moore.
It what Lande had to say about Moore that is the most attention grabbing. Here's what he had to say about Moore:
Sporting News’ semi-bold prediction for Kellen Moore
He deserves late-third-round draft consideration next April. He shares some positive qualities with a young Mark Brunell but appears to be more of a quality backup at the NFL level. He is more accurate in the underneath and intermediate areas with above average-accuracy downfield. He is a tough and competitive leader.
The Brunell comparison is a somewhat apt one based on size. Moore is listed at 6’0, 187 pounds while Brunell was 6’1, 215 pounds. But to consider Moore a late-third-round player is a stretch.
Moore is an easy player to root for. He’s a winner playing on the perpetual underdog. He gets by on hustle and smarts, not incredible ability. Kellen Moore is the everyman.
In reality as an NFL prospect, though, Moore is not a third-round player. Quarterbacks with a long delivery that lack both arm strength and size don’t get picked in the third round. In reality, Moore will probably top out as a fourth- or fifth-round player.
Where do you think Moore will get drafted in April?
