On Saturday, the third round of the 2011 Travelers Championship is underway, and an amateur has a chance to make history. Patrick Cantlay finds himself at the top of the leaderboard, and if he can manage to hang on to the lead, he’ll be the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event in over 20 years.
2011 Travelers Championship: Leaderboard Has Amateur Patrick Cantlay On Top Entering Round 3
Cantlay, a 19-year-old who attends UCLA, is beginning his third round as of this writing. At 13-under for the tournament, he holds a one-stroke lead over Johnson Wagner. After a 3-under first round, Cantlay caught fire in Round 2, shooting eight birdies and an eagle to score a 60. In doing so, he set the new record for the lowest single-round score ever for an amateur in a PGA Tour event.
As Cantlay makes his way through the TPC River Highlands course on Saturday, the hole to watch will certainly be the 13th. Cantlay has scored eagles on this hole in each of his first two rounds.
Here is how the leaderboard looks as Cantlay prepares to hit the course:
1. Patrick Cantlay (-13)
2. Johnson Wagner (-12)
T3. Bo Van Pelt (-10)
T3. Fredrik Jacobson
T3. Nick Watney
T3. Shane Bertsch
7. Nine tied (-9)
