Brandon McDonald was traded to DC United from the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for allocation dollars on Monday. McDonald started eight of the Earthquakes first nine matches this year, but has been relegated to the bench in their past seven.

The timing is not perfect, but McDonald’s benching does generally coincide with the Earthquakes’ improved form. After starting the season with one win in their first eight, the Quakes have now won four of seven and lost just once in their past eight. McDonald has played just 12 minutes in San Jose’s past six and not appeared at all in three of those.
With United, though, he could find a much more regular role. While Perry Kitchen and Ethan White may, in fact, be the future center back pairing in Black and Red, they are both rookies. Since becoming the regular pairing four matches ago, United has gone 0-1-3 and allowed seven goals.
