Marshall Football’s Tron Martinez Arrested For Disorderly Conduct, Obstruction

Marshall University running back Tron Martinez was arrested early Friday evening on disorderly conduct and obstruction charges, the Huntington (WV) Herald-Dispatch reports. Details of the incident are not available as of 7:30 PM Eastern Monday evening, and no one from Marshall appears to have released a statement.

This isn’t the first time Martinez has found himself on the wrong side of the law.

On April 17, 2009, Martinez was arrested and charged with 11 felonies, including gang participation, and a pair of misdemeanors in his hometown. At the time, Martinez had a football scholarship to Old Dominion University, which was quickly taken away.

He spent two and a half months in jail and nearly nine months on home confinement. Eventually, all charges were dropped minus a misdemeanor.

Martinez came to Marshall as a walk-on, but earned himself a scholarship after last season, in which he had 78 carries for 262 yards rushing, to go along with eight receptions for 74 yards. Before Friday's incident, he looked likely to pick up a ton of carries with the Thundering Herd in 2011 - depending in part, perhaps, on the performance of Travon Van, a hotshot transfer from the University of Florida, and perhaps also Essray Taliaferro.

It’s unclear, at this point, whether Martinez’s current legal problems will be a lasting problems or a mere distraction. The fact that these recent charges are only of the misdemeanor variety suggest that it’s probably the latter.
