College World Series, Game 2 Score: South Carolina, Florida Scoreless After First Inning

Game 2 of the College World Series Championship Series is set to get underway. After a thrilling 11th inning Game 1 victory by South Carolina, the Florida Gators will give it everything they have to ensure that this will not be the final night of their incredible season.

Taking the mound first tonight is Gamecocks staff ace Michael Roth. The junior lefty has been dominate all season, possessing a 13-3 record and an unbelievable 0.98 ERA over 137.1 innings. Florida has their work cut out for them.

Gator leadoff man Bryson Smith started the game off well, working a seven pitch at-bat into a single up the middle. He was promptly moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nolan Fontana.

With a man in early scoring position, catcher Mike Zunino -- one of last night’s scapegoats -- stepped to the plate and showed excellent patience, methodically working 1-2 count into an eight pitch walk that put runners on first and second. However Roth showed no anxiety, calmly inducing Preston Tucker and Josh Adams to fly out on consecutive pitches to escape the early jam.

Now it was Florida freshman phenom Karsten Whitson’s turn to take the mound.

The youngster showed some early jitters to start the game, hitting Scott Wingo in the foot to give the Gamecock leadoff man a free pass to first. He rebounded quickly though, striking out centerfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. swinging on a blistering 1-2 count. That was all the Gator needed to get himself going, as he hastily induced last-night’s hero, Christian Walker, into a double play to end the inning.
