AT&T National 2011: Tiger Woods Out, But Justin Rose Aims To Repeat

Tiger Woods had hoped to make his comeback in time to compete in this week’s AT&T National that he hosts, but it now looks like he might not even be ready for the British Open on July 14. At a news conference for his tournament, Woods indicated there is still no timetable for his return from his injured knee and Achilles’, which has kept him off of various golf courses since he only got through nine holes of the Players Championship back in May.

“I’m just going to learn my lesson from what I did at The Players,” said Woods, who is at least out of his walking boot and off crutches. “I tried to push it too hard and hurt myself and that’s the reason I’m going to be different this time.”

With Woods out, the AT&T National field is as open as ever. Justin Rose is the defending champion after shooting 10-under par at Aronimink Golf Course in 2010. This year Rose has made $1.3 million, has eight top-25 finishes and is 37th in the FedexCup standings. He’ll tee off at 12:55 p.m. on Thursday.

Nick Watney is probably the field’s top player right now, sitting fifth in the FedExCup standings and 15th in the World Golf Rankings. He also finished seventh in last year’s tournament. Watney tees off at 8:15 a.m.
