Chris Drury has captained the New York Ranger for the past three seasons after joining the team prior to the start of the 2007 season. That will change next season, however, as Drury has accepted a buy out of the final year of his contract with the Rangers.
Chris Drury Becomes Free Agent After New York Rangers Buy Out Contract
The Rangers will have to find a new captain next year as they bought out the remainder of the 34-year-old Drury's contract for a reported $3.33 million, according to the New York Post, which would have likely paid him the full $5 million he was owed had he applied for a medical exception due to a left knee condition.
“It was a great honor and privilege to be a New York Ranger for the past four years, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to fulfill that childhood dream,” Drury said in a statement that was sent to The Post by e-mail. “The Rangers are a first-class organization with great people in the hockey, public relations, team services and community relations departments.”
By accepting the buyout, Drury has likely set himself up for a return to the Buffalo Sabres, according to the Post. Where ever the three-time Olympian ends up, he is eligible to sign a one-year contract with bonuses because he was on IR for more than 100 days.
