Di Matteo Named As Chelsea No. 2

Roberto Di Matteo has been officially named as Chelsea's new assistant manager, at the press conference to unveil new boss Andre Villas-Boas.

The 41-year old former midfielder, who spent a memorable period of his career at Chelsea, is something of a surprise name as it was expected that he would return to management following his sacking from West Bromwich Albion last season.

Villas-Boas claimed that the Italian's arrival would help Chelsea play an attractive brand of football, stating: "We are proud defenders of the beauty of the game. It makes no sense for us to get into a club like Chelsea and play dreadful football. This is why this technical staff was picked, based on a philosophy of playing well and as a team."

It seems a strange choice, since Di Matteo is still such a relatively young manager, though he may command respect in the dressing room for his playing career. Whether the pair can survive the difficult environment between a notoriously powerful and vocal dressing room, and the whims of Roman Abramovich, will be interesting to say the least.
