Just two days after he pitched seven strong innings against the Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners lefthander Erik Bedard has been placed on the disabled list by the team, according to a tweet from Dave O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Mariners Place Erik Bedard On DL
Bedard has a sprained left knee. He had not missed a start this season, after spending much of the last three years on the DL (including not pitching a major league inning in 2010), and had a solid 3.00 ERA and 1.11 WHIP.
The Mariners have been around the .500 mark, which in the weak AL West has them in playoff contention. Nevertheless, there had been numerous trade rumors floating around Bedard; teams including the Yankees had been mentioned in those rumors. Just a week ago, Baseball Nation editor Jeff Sullivan pondered Bedard's health at mynorthwest.com:
Bedard’s up to 77 innings on the year. Wednesday night, he should add to that total. Even healthy, durable pitchers are always a risk to get hurt out of nowhere, and you never know when someone’s going to strain an oblique, but I think there’s a decent chance Erik Bedard might just be able to hold up after all.Bedard has now thrown 90 innings, and oddly, this injury appears totally unrelated to his past woes. But now, he’ll be out at least until after the All-Star break. According to Mariners beat writer Larry Stone, catcher Jose Yepez has been recalled to take Bedard’s place on the 25-man roster.
