In the third inning of Cole Hamels' Thursday start against the Red Sox, the pitcher snared a line-drive comebacker off the bat of Marco Scutaro. In the fourth inning, Adrian Gonzalez hit another liner to the mound. The drive knocked Hamels' glove clean off, and though Hamels recovered to make the play, he was soon thereafter removed from the game.
Cole Hamels Injury: Phillies Starter Hurt Fielding Comebacker
Hamels has been given an initial diagnosis of "right hand contusion," pending x-rays. He made some practice throws after Gonzalez's liner and finished the fourth inning by retiring Dustin Pedroia, but was replaced in the fifth by David Herndon.
We'll keep you updated as we hear more. Hamels came into action on Thursday with a 2.49 ERA and a K/BB over five, so this would obviously be a huge loss for the Phillies in the event that he has to miss some time. They can be thankful, though, that it's his non-pitching hand.
