The Montreal Impact, apparently not wanting to wait for the full impact of an impactful press conference, have let it slip that they will retain their name when they move to MLS. Does this qualify as news? The team has been called the Impact ever since their founding in 1993 and has been owned by the Saputo family ever since.
Montreal Impact Confirm MLS Name Will Be ... Montreal Impact
In a bit of a twist, though, the Impact will be changing their logo and jerseys when they enter MLS in 2012. The colors will stay the same, however.
When the Impact play their first MLS match, it will be the first time since 1983 that top division soccer will be played in Montreal. During the days of the original NASL, two different teams called Montreal home. Montreal Olympique competed from 1971-73 and the Montreal Manic played in 1981-83.
Since professional outdoor soccer returned with the Impact in 1993, the team has seen steady improvement at the gate and have now been averaging more than 11,000 fans every season since 2005.
