Mariners Vs. White Sox: Danks Finally Wins

What were you doing on September 30, 2010?

If you’re like me, you can’t remember what you had for lunch yesterday, much less what you were doing on a specific day a little more than eight months ago.

But until yesterday, you can bet the White Sox' John Danks remembers. On September 30, 2010, he threw six solid innings against the Red Sox and won his 15th game of the 2010 season; in his three full seasons before 2011 as a member of the White Sox rotation, Danks had been a model of consistency, posting ERAs of 3.32, 3.77 and 3.72, WHIPs of 1.23, 1.28 and 1.22 and win totals of 12, 13 and 15.

The ERA is a little higher this season -- 4.75 -- and so is the WHIP -- 1.47 -- but that’s not the only reason that Danks had begun the season 0-8 in his first 11 starts. It didn’t help that the White Sox were shut out twice and scored a total of 29 runs in those 11 starts, ranking Danks dead last among 67 qualified AL starters in run support.

Danks didn't get much run support Monday night, either, just three runs from his White Sox teammates, including Paul Konerko's 13th home run of the season. But Danks responded with one of his best outings of the year, holding the Mariners to just one unearned run in 7.1 innings, and wound up with his first win of the season. That prevented him from becoming the first White Sox pitcher to start a season 0-9 since Roy Wilkinson was 0-10 in 1921. (Wilkinson wound up 4-20 for the '21 Sox, the first post-Black Sox team; the team went 62-92.)

Roy Wilkinson. You remember him, don’t you? Of course you don’t; you’re still trying to remember what you had for lunch yesterday.

The victory edged the White Sox to within six games of the first-place Indians, who lost to the Twins Monday night. The two teams play again on the South Side of Chicago Tuesday night.
