Recently, struggling Rockies center fielder Dexter Fowler has been fighting through some abdominal discomfort. On Tuesday, the team has made the expected move, placing Fowler on the disabled list. The stint is retroactive to June 5, and comes at a bad time for a player already hearing rumors of a demotion to the minors.
Charlie Blackmon Joins Rockies To Replace Injured Dexter Fowler
In Fowler's stead, the Rockies have promoted prospect Charlie Blackmon. Blackmon does not have a clear path to an everyday job, but he will presumably share time with Seth Smith and Ryan Spilborghs in the corners, while Carlos Gonzalez shifts over to center. Blackmon's stint with the Rockies could be a short one, but if he hits the ground running, he could stick, and Fowler could end up in Colorado Springs once he's healthy.
The 24-year-old Blackmon has primarily played right field in triple-A, owning a .965 OPS. Before the year, John Sickels ranked him as the #11 prospect in the system, and one figures he’s only improved his stock with his play through the first two months. In a word, he’s exciting, and it’s only a matter of time before he makes his debut.
