Just over two weeks ago, Detroit Tigers lefty starter Phil Coke sustained a bone bruise in his foot while trying to make a defensive play. The bone bruise wasn't considered severe, but was sufficiently bad to force Coke to the disabled list.
Phil Coke Injury: Tigers Activate Lefty From DL
The assumption at the time was that Coke would return after the 15-day minimum. So now I'm almost disappointed with how anticlimactic this is: after 15 days, Coke is just fine to return, and will start for the Tigers Wednesday night against the Rangers.
To make room for Coke on the roster, the Tigers optioned catcher Omir Santos. Before getting hurt, Coke owned a 3.81 ERA in 52 innings, with 30 strikeouts and 16 walks. He had been replaced by Andy Oliver, who made two starts, but they were not good starts, so Oliver's back in the minors and the Tigers are quite pleased to have Coke back and healthy.
