Tuesday night, in a game against the Red Sox, Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira took a Jon Lester fastball in the knee. This was the scene that ensued:
Mark Teixeira Injury: Yankees Slugger Starting Against Red Sox On Wednesday
Given the images, it would’ve been fair to assume that Teixeira would be out for a while. Even if he didn’t have to go on the disabled list, it looked like he might miss a few games.
Surprise! Nope. Teixeira was right back in the Yankees’ starting lineup on Wednesday, batting third and playing first base. He probably isn’t 100 percent - he did just take a fastball to the knee - but he’s clearly well enough to move around and even play the field.
X-rays on Teixeira’s knee came back negative, and the slugger was diagnosed with a bruise. Even so, word was that Teixeira would be re-evaluated on Wednesday, and Joe Girardi anticipated that Teixeira would miss some action. So this rapid turnaround is something of a tiny, tiny miracle. Scientists may want to investigate the possible healing powers of Jeremy Piven.
