Liverpool and Sunderland have both confirmed the sale of England under-21 international Jordan Henderson. The midfielder, 20, had a price tag set by Sunderland and manager Steve Bruce of around £20M, which Liverpool are believed to have met with £13M cash and the inclusion of French striker David Ngog as a makeweight. A statement released by Liverpool notes that the deal between the teams is complete, with only personal terms and a routine medical to go before Henderson is unveiled as a Liverpool player:
Liverpool Agree Deal To Buy Jordan Henderson
Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson. The 20-year-old will today discuss personal terms and undergo a medical on Merseyside after a fee was agreed between the two clubs.
It’s an interesting move for Liverpool but a fairly sensible one for Sunderland, who found themselves holding one of the more valuable properties in the game: A home-grown, English midfielder. Sunderland needed a forward as well as reinforcements to the rest of the squad, and they can probably replace Henderson’s contributions with Ngog and the money they received.
As for Liverpool, it's an open question as to just how Henderson will slot into an already-crowded midfield, one which features captain Steven Gerrard, Raul Meireles and Lucas Leiva. It's difficult to see Henderson breaking into that side anytime soon.
