Back on May 16, in a game against the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia landed on his right knee while making a play in the field. Pedroia's knee has been bothering him ever since, and now he's going to get his knee examined and may need surgery. The Globe:
Dustin Pedroia Injury: Red Sox Second Baseman Might Need Knee Surgery
Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia will return to Boston tomorrow to have his right knee examined and is facing the possibility of surgery that would sideline him for at least a month.
The doctors are going to look around Pedroia’s knee, and if they see any significant damage, they’ll repair it. According to Pedroia, this isn’t what he wants, but it’s what he needs, and if he gets cut open, so be it. One figures the discomfort through which he’s been playing has grown borderline unmanageable.
In the event that Pedroia does have surgery and lands on the DL, the Red Sox would likely shift Jed Lowrie to second, and leave Marco Scutaro at short. Lowrie's been dealing with discomfort of his own, but his aching shoulder looked fine upon examination.
Pedroia’s offensive numbers this season are well below where they’ve been in the past, but his slump predates his knee injury, and may be tied to his surgically repaired left foot. It could be tied to almost anything.
