As of now, it would appear QB Jake Locker is the most likely player on the Tennessee Titans to start the 2011 season at quarterback. But...the Titans plan to make some moves and add another veteran quarterback to compete with Locker and potentially become the starter in Locker's rookie year.
Chris Johnson Says ‘Of Course’ Jake Locker Will Be Titans Week 1 Starter
GM Mike Reinfeldt said as much shortly after the 2011 NFL draft.
“We’d still like a guy that’s been a seasoned guy that could step in and play. I don’t think we want to put the pressure on Jake to have to do it. I think we want to be able to let him go at his own pace,” Reinfeldt said. “I think (Jake) is going to be able to go faster than people think he can, but I think we need to have a veteran that we can throw in for a bunch of the season and be comfortable with him for winning games.”
Don’t tell that to RB Chris Johnson. At the Titans player-only workouts on Wednesday, Johnson suggested that Locker would be the man whenever the season starts, according to the Tennessean.
"He's a top 10 pick and they got rid of Vince Young. So of course he is going to be the quarterback. Everybody knows that," Johnson said.
I'd focus on what the GM, and not Johnson, said. The Titans need a veteran quarterback to take the reins in year oneso Locker can get his feet wet. Folks have been throwing out QB Matt Hasselbeck's name as a possibility and, along with names like QB Marc Bulger, it appears the Titans would like to go that route.
Whenever free agency starts, count on the Titans adding someone like Hasselbeck or Bulger. Despite what Johnson says, Locker should be on the bench in Week 1 as he begins to learn the offense.
