Via tweet from MLB.com’s Carrie Muskat, the Cubs have placed Carlos Zambrano on the disabled list with back problems and activated reliever Kerry Wood.
Carlos Zambrano To DL, Kerry Wood Activated By Cubs
Zambrano has had off and on back trouble for a couple of years and yesterday tweaked it before the game. He was pronounced good to go, but hurt it further while trying to field a bunt by the Giants’ Brandon Crawford in the second inning and had to leave the game. It’s likely he’ll miss two starts and return after the All-Star break.
Wood has been on the DL since June 9 with blister issues on his throwing hand. This has also been a recurring problem; Wood spent time on the DL in 2008 with blisters when he was the Cubs’ closer.
No word yet on who might take Zambrano’s next turn in the Cubs’ rotation, which will come up Tuesday in Washington. Of the five starters in the Opening Day Cubs rotatrion, only Ryan Dempster has not been on the DL this year.
