James Wisniewski Signs Six Year, $33 Million Deal With Columbus Blue Jackets

James Wisniewski is the newest member of the Columbus Blue Jackets, and his wallet is telling him that Ohio is a pretty fantastic place. The defenseman signed a six year, $33 million deal with Scott Howson's bunch, under 48 hours after he acquired Wisniewski's rights from the Montreal Canadiens.

The Columbus Dispatch first reported the news.

The 27-year-old made $3.25 million per year on his last contract and has been known to bounce around teams quite a bit. He's played in Montreal, with the Islanders, Ducks and Blackhawks all since 2005.

Is he worth this kind of raise, which sees him earn $5.5 million a year? A quick glance over at SB Nation’s The Cannon, where readers are gathering to discuss free agency on Friday, makes it look like CBJ fans are happy with the deal.

The deal continues a trend that we've seen all free agent year so far -- lots of money going to lots of players. Dan Hamhuis signed with the Vancouver Canucks last July 1 for $27 million across six years, and that was the most expensive deal we saw last year.

It’s not even 12 p.m., when unrestricted free agency opens, and we’re already past that mark on this July 1.
