Supplemental draft may be Caleb King’s only option

After being dismissed by the University of Georgia, running back Caleb King faces an uncertain future.

After a below-average junior year in 2010, King needed a solid senior year to grab the attention of the NFL. Now King will either have to transfer to a Football Championship Subdivision or enter the supplemental draft.

If he chooses the supplemental draft route, there is plenty going against King off the field. He was arrested for not showing up to pay a speeding ticket. He’s been held back by injuries. King was also kicked off Georgia’s team after being ruled academically ineligible.

To some level, academic success is irrelevant to a player’s NFL potential. But if you consider that King was suspended for Georgia’s bowl game in 2010 and still couldn’t grades up, you have to question his work ethic to an extent.

For that same reason, it might not be smart of King to go to an FCS school. The football may be easier, but the academics necessarily won’t be.

Solely as a supplemental draft prospect, King probably carries a seventh-round grade due to his size and potential. At 5-foot-11 and 217 pounds, King has the size of an NFL back and runs with good pad level. He’s a good zone scheme option because of his quickness.

Whether or not he’ll get to display it in the pros could King’s willingness to work hard.
