Phoenix Suns Add Elston Turner To Coaching Staff

The Phoenix Suns added Elston Turner to their coaching staff on Thursday. Turner, 52, has been an assistant in the NBA for the past 14 years, spending time with Portland (1996-'00), Sacramento (2000-'06) and, most recently, Houston (2007-'11)

His job with Phoenix will be to focus on the defense for the team. Over his time with Houston, the Rockets held opponents to a field goal percentage of 45.5 percent.

"Elston Turner has been a player and a coach in this league and we're confident that he will bring a new voice to our team that will help us improve," said Suns head coach Alvin Gentry. "What made Elston the right candidate is his experience working alongside offensive coaches and his willingness to be creative defensively."

He played eight seasons in the NBA with Dallas, Denver and Chicago. Following his stint in the NBA, Turner also played in the CBA for five years and spent three years playing in Europe.
