Derek Jeter's 3,000th career hit was a powerful moment. So powerful, it would seem, that it injured the catcher squatting behind him. According to a Tampa Bay Rays press release, John Jaso - who was catching David Price on the day of Jeter's achievement - is now on the disabled list.
John Jaso Injury: Rays Catcher On DL With Oblique Strain
The Tampa Bay Rays have placed catcher John Jaso on the 15-day disabled list with right oblique strain, retroactive to July 10. To take his place on the active roster, catcher Jose Lobaton will be recalled tomorrow from Durham (AAA) and will be in uniform for tomorrow's game against Boston.
This would've felt like a bigger blow a year ago, when Jaso posted a .372 OBP. This season, he's batted .222 with a .639 OPS, and he hasn't been particularly terrific in the field, either. Losing him for a few weeks still hurts the Rays, since Jaso was the starter and backup Kelly Shoppach hasn't been much himself.
Lobaton has posted an .899 OPS with Durham, and may get a half-decent chance to play until Jaso comes back. The 26-year-old has seven games of big-league experience, all coming with the 2009 Padres. Another 2009 Padres Fun Fact is that, for a time, that team had Cliff Floyd on it. Wow!
