Demetri McCamey To Play For Turkey’s Mersin Team

Former Illinois standout Demetri McCamey will be playing basketball in two continents next season after he signed a one-year contract with Turkish Basketball League team Mersin on Thursday, ESPN Chicago reported.

The 6-foot-3 McCamey was the Fighting Illini’s best player last year, averaging 14.6 points and 6.1 assists as a senior. After many mock drafts projected him to be selected in the NBA draft’s second round, he went unselected. His agent, Roger Montgomery, spoke to Scott Powers of ESPN Chicago:

“We thought this was a good opportunity for the year,” Montgomery said. “There’s a lot of uncertainty with what’s going on with the NBA season. We wanted to get his career started. There were a lot of teams that were interested in him. We had to sift through them and do our due diligence for what was the best fit for Demetri.

“We decided this situation from a financial standpoint, basketball standpoint and location standpoint was the best fit. Turkey is a really, really quality league. It’s been in the news as of late. That’s why we made the decision.”

After Allen Iverson was greeted with a hero's welcome in the-country-formerly-known-as-Asia-Minor, Deron Williams signed a contract to play there in case the season was cancelled due to a lockout. All of a sudden, Turkey is the place to be among standout point guards. Maybe the hand-checking policies are more lax there than they are in the L.
