Longtime President of HBO Sports Ross Greenburg Resigns
Ross Greenburg had a hand in creating all of those shows, not to mention helping guide the station in its cornerstone boxing programming. However his time as president of HBO Sports is over now that he has resigned amid pressure Sunday.
Greenburg says he is leaving due to fatigue. However, having been under pressure since losing Manny Pacquiao to rival Showtime for his May 7 fight with Shane Mosley, most see Greenburg’s hand as being forced.
Leading boxing promoter Bob Arum moved the fight due to a deteriorating relationship with Greenburg and HBO Sports while Greenburg also weathered criticism about other fights and purses handed out.
Arum is said to be weighing proposals from HBO and Showtime for Pacquiao’s Nov. 12 pay-per-view fight against Juan Manuel Marquez. One might assume that HBO could increase its odds of getting that, and future Arum business, if Greenburg were no longer a part of the equation.
Greenburg has won 51 Sports Emmys and 8 Peabody Awards and is considered one of boxing’s kingmakers for the way his position influenced which fighters were featured and the promotion they received.
