Ike Davis Injury: Return Still Distant As Ankle Remains Problematic

Yes, this is another Ike Davis injury update.

No, this probably will not be this season’s last Ike Davis injury update.

Davis appeared at a kids’ camp and was asked by one of the youngsters, “How’s your ankle doin’?”

Ike’s response: “It’s not good. But, you know, next year I will be back and healthy, I promise.”

ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin on Davis’s ailing ankle:

He received a cortisone shot last week as a last-ditch effort to avoid season-ending surgery. If the ankle is "not feeling a lot better" when Davis attempts to run again in two and a half weeks, he will have surgery. Davis plans to return home to Phoenix when the Mets complete their homestand on Thursday.

Whether officially or unofficially, Davis’s 2011 is either mostly or completely over. Even if he doesn’t need surgery, he would still be in for a long rehab process before returning to the lineup. Which makes it seem exceptionally unlikely that we’ll see him on TV before 2012.

Speaking of which, there's been a lot of talk about the Mets perhaps trading Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes, and starting over. Well, they might well trade Beltran, but it's not exceptionally hard to imagine the club playing well next season with Jose Reyes and Ike Davis and David Wright in the lineup, and Johan Santana in the pitching rotation.
