Pittsburgh Penguins defender Brooks Orpik had hernia surgery, the second straight season he's had to undergo the procedure. He is not expected to miss any of the regular season, but will need 6-8 weeks to recovery from the surgery on his right side. Last summer, Orpik underwent surgery to repair a hernia on his left side and was back in time for training camp.

The left side hernia injury did not limit the 31-year-old last season, although he did miss some time due to other injuries. In 63 games, he still managed to put up a career-best +/- of 12 last season. His offensive production was down a bit, as he scored just one goal and had 12 assists a year after registering a career best 25 points.
Orpik is considered the Penguins’ defensive leader both on and off the ice. He has posted positive +/- ratings in each of the past five seasons and averaged more than 20 minutes of ice time in each of the past three.
