Stephen Drew Injury: D’backs Shortstop Suffers Fractured Ankle

The Arizona Diamondbacks' postseason hopes took a serious blow Wednesday night when shortstop Stephen Drew sustained a fractured right ankle.

In the fourth inning, Drew attempted to score from second base on Chris Young's single to left field. While sliding, his right foot and ankle slammed into Milwaukee catcher Jonathan Lucroy's shin guard. Drew was out, and eventually was helped from the field and couldn't put any weight on his right foot.

Willie Bloomquist started the game at first base, then took over at shortstop after Drew got hurt. Either Bloomquist or Drew has started every game but two at shortstop this season, so Bloomquist figures to see most of the action there in the short term.

The Diamondbacks' primary Triple-A shortstop this season has been ex-major leaguer Cody Ransom ... all 35 years of him. Ransom's having a fantastic 2011 with the bat, but considering his history in the majors (and those 35 years) he doesn't figure to serve as more than a spare part, even if he does take Drew's place on the roster.
