Accompanying the news that Grady Sizemore is going to be out of action for at least a month, Thursday the Indians are calling up prospect Jason Kipnis from the minors, and demoting Luis Valbuena.

Playing for Triple-A Columbus this season, Kipnis ranks first in triples (9) and second in runs (64). Just 5’10”, Kipnis isn’t real fast but is smart, and has stolen 12 bases in 13 attempts this season.
With Cleveland's second basemen -- mostly Orlando Cabrera, with a sprinkling of Cord Phelps and others -- ranking 12th in the American League in runs and 11th in OPS, the Indians are obviously looking to get better there.
That said, Kipnis was an outfielder before 2010, and management might consider leaving Cabrera at second and giving the kid a shot in left field, at least for the rest of this season. Eventually Sizemore and Shin-Soo Choo should take their rightful places in the lineup, but until then the Indians are practically bereft of good-hitting outfielders.
