In a move that would remind one how things are in Pakistan, Sri Lanka Cricket have failed to select a captain for their home series against Australia. They have named a pool of players out of which the ODI and the T20I sides will be selected but decided against naming the skipper.
No Sri Lankan Captain Named For Australia Series...Yet!
Usually, the practice followed around the world is to name your captain and follow it up with announcing the team. In sides where captaincy is no debate, the presence of the captain is a foregone conclusion but even where there is a debate, it makes sense for the captain to be selected before hand in order to take his inputs while making the final selection.
Earlier, the Pakistani board had selected the squad for the World Cup but named the captain only after a few days, a decision some thought would undermine the confidence of the skipper.
Sri Lanka’s captain in the World Cup, Kumar Sangakkara had stepped down after guiding the side to the final of the tournament. After that, the selectors had wasted no time in naming Tillakaratne Dilshan as the skipper and while both, the Test and the ODI series were lost by narrow margins, it was a tough series to have first up.
Dilshan is a part of the pool that was named by the selectors but in the wake of the captain not being announced yet, it gives rise to a buzz on another change in guard.
Interestingly, things get even better. The vice-captain of the side for the tour of England, Thilina Kandamby, hasn’t been even put in the pool of players, essentially meaning that he will not be selected.
These confusing signals can hardly augur well for a team that has done well in the past but rumblings of background politics and administrative corruption have taken the sheen off their on-field showings. Sri Lanka play five ODIs, two T20Is and three Tests against Australia from August 6.
