Fresh off scoring one of the biggest goals in Women’s World Cup history and leading the United States to the championship game, Abby Wambach has taken on an entirely new kind of challenge. The United States’ all-time leading scorer will serve as the player-coach of magicJack, her Women’s Professional Soccer team. MagicJack’s owner Dan Borislow explained the decision this way to the Palm Beach Post:
Women’s World Cup Star Abby Wambach To Serve As Player-Coach In WPS
“The thing people don’t know is she’s incredibly smart,” Borislow said. “If you gave her an IQ test, she’d probably come out a genius.”
Wambach, 31, has no prior coaching experience, but is among the most decorated American women in history. She has played in three World Cups, won an Olympic gold medal, scored 122 international goals and competed in both both the WUSA and the WPS. More recently, she scored a dramatic game-winner in the 122nd minute against Brazil and scored a go-ahead goal in stoppage time against Japan that looked to be the cup-winner.
MagicJack and WPS are no doubt hoping that a move like this will help spark interest in the fledgling league. The third year league, which rose from the ashes of the WUSA, has been struggling financially and this year was cast into doubt when several teams either folded or threatened to close their doors. The league’s third season was eventually started with just six teams, none of them on the west coast.
