According to ESPN's Jim Bowden, the Detroit Tigers hope to bolster their rotation by trading for San Diego's Aaron Harang:
MLB Trade Rumors: Tigers Hot For Aaron Harang?
Tigers front-runner to get Harang from Padres for back of rotation
For better or worse, the Tigers seem set with the top four in their rotation: Cy Young candidate Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Brad Penny, Rick Porcello. But the fifth slot has seen a parade of fellows, none of them particularly effective (or effective at all).
Harang’s 3.20 ERA with the Padres this season is deceptive, as his peripheral statistics are nothing special and of course he’s blessed by his home ballpark. As a No. 5 starter, though? He would fit nicely, and would at the least allow management to focus on other roster issues.
While they’ve not yet taken charge of the American League Central, the Tigers are rated by Baseball Prospectus as 61-percent favorites to capture the title. Adding Harang would bump that up by another percent or two.
