Wily Mo Peña crushed the ball in Triple-A this spring and summer, and was rewarded by the Diamondbacks with a late-June call-up. And in just 46 plate appearances with the big club before getting sent back down, Peña cranked out five home runs.

There is one more thing, though. It’s just a tiny thing, so inconsequential that it’s hardly worth mentioning. But we try to be a full-service website, here at Baseball Nation. So we have to mention, just in passing lest anyone become discouraged and quit, that Peña’s 46 at-bats are also the sum of his plate appearances. He didn’t draw a single walk to accompany his 19 strikeouts. He didn’t double or triple, either.
He did single four times, but essentially Wily Mo Peña is a two-outcomes hitter, and one of those outcomes isn’t something that gets a lot of general managers (let alone managers) excited in a good way.
I’m not saying that nobody’s going to be interested in picking up Wily Mo Peña. I’m saying that the market for veteran Triple-A hitters who strike out 40 percent of the time, never walk, and don’t play all that well in the outfield aren’t exactly highly prized commodities when GMs get together and talk pork bellies.
