Tully Banta-Cain Told By New England Patriots He Will Be Released

The New England Patriots have told LB Tully Banta-Cain that he will be released when teams are permitted to do so on Thursday. He's 30 years old and has been productive in New England so he'll find another team. It's also possible, though unconfirmed, that the Patriots want to bring him back at a lower-rate.

What makes Banta-Cain’s situation unique is that he reportedly had offseason surgery. Via Boston Globe:

Banta-Cain had surgery four days ago to repair an abdominal strain from an injury which had been affecting him since last season. Patriots team doctors knew about the injury and gave him a plan to deal with it during the lockout. At one point over the past few months, a source said the injury felt “fine,” but as Banta-Cain began to ramp up workouts about a month ago, the problem flared up.

How that played into the situation is unknown. He’s expected to have about a month recovery time.

He signed a three-year deal last offseason and his salary cap number was expected to be around $4 million for the 2011-12 season.

We’ll be keeping an eye out on Banta-Cain and where he heads next.
