WR Roy Williams Getting Released By Dallas Cowboys

Three years ago the Dallas Cowboys traded a first, third, sixth and seventh round draft pick to the Detroit Lions for WR Roy Williams. The team then signed him to a long-term contract and hoped he would become the star receiver their offense was missing.

Things haven’t gone as planned with Williams failing to pass 600 yards receiving in both of his full seasons in Dallas. For that, the Cowboys will release. ESPN’s Calvin Watkins reports the Cowboys have informed Williams of his release. The Cowboys can officially release him on Thursday.

Williams has a lot of physical tools that will make him desirable on the free agency market but the production simply hasn’t been there. He hasn’t had a 1,000 yard season since his third year in the league in 2006 and has never caught more than eight touchdown passes in a season.

He’ll draw some interest and sign someplace at a reduced rate. He wasn’t an important enough piece to that offense to warrant his paycheck. The Cowboys will continue cutting veteran players as they try to get under the salary cap.
